Soroptimist International (SI) is an international association of professionally successful and socially active women. The first club was founded in 1921 in Oakland, California. There are currently around 100.000 women organized in over 3000 clubs in 130 countries.
The name "soroptimist" originates from the Latin "sorores optimae" and means "sisters striving for the best".
The members share the following goals:
- high ethical standards
- human rights and advancement of the status of women
- a spirit of friendship and mutual help
- international understanding, equality and peace
The members promote social contact, cooperation and tolerance. The club is a non-governmental organization with representatives in various UN organizations. It is neutral with regard to politics and religion. The official languages are English and French. Women can become members by invitation only.
There are three SI clubs in Slovenia:
- SIC Maribor - established on March 20, 1993
- SIC Ljubljana - established on Maj, 1993
- SIC Ptuj - established on September 29, 2001
